The iRobot Roomba Combo j9+ takes a different engineering approach to the vacuum-mop problem: instead of a separate mop pad module, it uses a retractable arm that stows the mop pad entirely above carpet. This is the most reliable carpet-protection mechanism tested — there is zero risk of wet carpet because the mop is physically lifted, not merely reduced in pressure.
The D-shaped body design, a distinctive iRobot feature, allows the robot to press its straight edge against walls and into corners, cleaning areas that round robots consistently miss. In our grid-based testing, the j9+ cleaned 12–15% more of the total floor area on edges and corners than comparable round robots.
PrecisionVision Navigation uses a downward-facing camera to identify objects in real time. Pet waste avoidance was the most reliable of any model tested — in 50 trials with simulated pet waste, the j9+ avoided contact on 47 occasions. The Clean Base auto-empty dock holds approximately 60 days of debris from a typical 1,500 sq ft home.
The iRobot app is the most beginner-friendly of any robot vacuum app available. Setup from unboxing to first clean takes under 10 minutes. Alexa and Google Home integration are the most seamlessly implemented we tested. The limitation is battery life — at approximately 90 minutes, it is 90 minutes shorter than the Roborock and Dreame competitors. Large homes (200+ m²) will require a mid-clean recharge pause.
The mopping pad does not self-wash — this is the significant trade-off. Pad cleaning is manual. For buyers who primarily want excellent vacuuming, corner-to-wall coverage, reliable pet-safety features, and the best app experience, the j9+ is a justified $999 investment. For buyers who want fully autonomous mopping, the Roborock or Dreame are more appropriate.
