The Nest Hub Max is the right answer to a specific question: which smart display is best if you are already invested in Google Home, Google Photos, and YouTube? The 10-inch display running Google's smart home interface integrates naturally with the Google ecosystem in ways that competing devices cannot match — Google Photos displays your personal photo library as the screensaver, YouTube plays through the full interface with your subscription and history, and Google Assistant handles follow-on conversational queries more naturally than Alexa.
The built-in Nest Cam is the most distinctive hardware feature. Unlike a standard front-facing camera used only for video calls, the Nest Cam provides continuous home monitoring that streams to the Nest app on your phone and can trigger security alerts. This replaces a separate Nest camera purchase — at $229, the Nest Hub Max costs only slightly more than a standalone 10-inch Google Nest Hub and a Nest Cam Indoor together.
Face Match is Google's answer to Amazon's Visual ID. It recognises household members and adjusts the home screen to show personalised content — calendar events, commute information, and preferred music. The recognition is reliable in good lighting but can struggle in the dimly lit kitchens where smart displays often live.
The Thread border router capability is forward-looking. As Matter-over-Thread devices proliferate — smart locks, sensors, and lights that use Thread's mesh networking — the Nest Hub Max acts as the local coordinator for these devices on your network. Combined with Matter controller support, this makes the Nest Hub Max the most future-compatible Google Home device for smart home expansion.
The limitations are the absence of a physical camera shutter (unlike the Echo Show 5) and the absence of a Zigbee hub (unlike the Echo Shows). For households with existing Zigbee infrastructure, this requires a separate hub. For households starting fresh with Matter-over-Thread devices, the Thread border router capability makes this limitation less relevant over time.
