The Dyson V12 Detect Slim is best understood as the V15 with a deliberate trade-off: 900g lighter, $150 cheaper, and 110 Air Watts less suction. For apartments and smaller homes with predominantly hard floors and medium-pile carpet, those trade-offs make practical sense — you are not paying for suction you will not use, and the reduced weight makes the machine more comfortable for daily use.
The V12 shares the V15's green laser detection and acoustic particle sensor — both present on the hard floor nozzle — as well as the whole-machine sealed HEPA filtration system. If the laser detection and real-time air quality data are the features that attracted you to Dyson, the V12 delivers both at a lower price and weight.
The 120 AW suction limitation becomes relevant on thick, high-pile carpet. The V15 at 230 AW visibly extracts more embedded debris from deep carpet fibres, particularly pet hair and fine particulates. If your home is primarily hard floor with area rugs or low-to-medium pile carpet, the V12 performs equivalently in most real-world cleaning situations. If you have significant thick-pile carpet, particularly with pets, the V15 is worth the premium.
The 60-minute Eco runtime is identical to the V15. Boost mode drops to 7 minutes — even less useful than the V15's 10 minutes. The dustbin at 0.35 L is smaller than the V15 and will need more frequent emptying in a dirty household.
